Changes to Massey University Vet Science pre-selection 2021

Changes to Veterinary Science Pre-Selection Semester Offering from 2021

After much consideration, and wide consultation with both current and previous veterinary applicants and other stakeholders, the School of Veterinary Science has made the decision to consolidate the Veterinary Science Pre-Selection Semester offering to the Manawatū (Palmerston North) campus only, effective from Semester 1 next year.

Entry into the BVSc professional phase is highly competitive, and over recent years the school has expended considerable resource creating more transparent and equitable processes and pathways for veterinary applicants. We are committed to giving all applicants equal opportunity to be selected into the professional phase of the programme, and believe that having all students based on the same campus, with access to the same resources, in particular our veterinary school and current veterinary students, is the best way to achieve this.

We understand this change will be disappointing for students intending to study the pre-selection semester on our Auckland campus, and will do our very best to help them to consider this new opportunity and what it will mean for them going forward. In terms of the practical side of things, students who have already applied for the pre-selection semester in Auckland next year should already have received a letter outlining this change in circumstances. We will also switch their application to the Manawatū campus so that if they do decide they would like to take up the opportunity to study in Manawatū in Semester 1 they do not have to go through the process of re-applying or changing their application.

If students would be considering staying in the on-campus halls of residence for their pre-selection semester, there is time to apply for the first round of room allocations which are usually sent out on October 1. If they change their mind later, they can easily withdraw their accommodation application, however it’s not always possible to get a room if they decide to apply later.

For those students that may decide this is not the pathway for them, or who would like to discuss their options further please feel free to put them in touch with your local Student Recruitment Adviser to have a chat about their options.

If you do have any questions regarding this decision please get in touch with the vet school at vetselection@massey.ac.nz.
